What is a dump cake?

A dump cake is an easy dessert recipe that is made with canned fruit pie filling or fresh fruit, butter and cake mix. There is no mixing required. All of the ingredients are layered, or ‘dumped’ into a baking dish and baked. They are often served with a scoop of ice cream of whipping cream.

Ingredients

This cherry cobbler with cake mix uses only three simple ingredients.

  • Vanilla cake mix – you can also use a box of yellow cake mix or even lemon cake mix!
  • Stick of Butter – I use salted butter but you can also use unsalted butter.
  • Cherry pie filling – you will need two cans of cherry filling.

Variations

Cherry Almond Dump Cake – stir in 1 teaspoon of almond extract into the cherry pie filling. Sprinkle the topping with 3/4 cup slivered almonds before baking.

Change up the fruit filling – you can use your favorite fruit fillings to customize and make your own flavor of dump cake.

Step 1 – Preheat oven to 350°F. This recipe is so quick and easy to make that by the time you’re oven is preheated, you should have the dump cake ready to go into the oven!

Step 2 – Spray the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. I like to use the one that’s formulated for baking, but you can use any type or brand.

If you don’t have baking spray, you can give the baking dish a light grease with butter.

Step 3 – Spread both cans of cherry pie filling into the bottom of the prepared cake pan and spread out evenly in the bottom of the pan with a spoon or spatula.
