How to Make Mac and Cheese in a Slow Cooker

Updated: Mikey taped a Cooking Showfor this dish.

Aunt Lou here.

I don’t know who was more excited about this recipe, me or the kids. They saw me taking photos of it in the crock pot, then plating it up and taking more photos. When I told them that they were going to have it for lunch, Ryder was literally jumping up and down with excitement! Iyla kept saying, “Yummy yummy!” over and over again. And truth be told, mommy couldn’t wait to dig in either!

I changed things up a bit on this recipe because I wanted it super creamy. My wish was fulfilled! And I added in the sprinkling of the Italian bread crumbs to see what it was like. The kids and I alike loved it with the additional flavor. If Italian bread crumbs are not up your alley, then feel free to leave them out.

Excellent! Made this Sunday and it tasted just like my MIL’s recipe. I always hated making it, though, because you had to stand over the stove and stir it non-stop so it didn’t burn. Very yummy, easy and no mess to clean up. Definitely a keeper!

Can this be made using uncooked rotini & increase the cooking time?

      Hi Jennifer!

I haven’t tried it with uncooked rotini. The liquid amounts, as well as the time, would need to be tweaked in order for the pasta to cook. Without testing it, I don’t want to make recommendations as to what those tweaks would be. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes! Enjoy!

      Hi Graeme!

It is half milk half light cream. I’ve also heard it called half cream. If you don’t have it available in Australia, you can google how to make substitutes. I promise you it will be worth the effort with how yummy this dish tastes! Enjoy!

FAQs

Can I add uncooked pasta to a crockpot? ›

If you're making noodles and pasta sauce in your slow cooker, we recommend you cook the pasta separately and make the sauce in the slow cooker. If you've done this before, you might opt to add dry noodles to the slow cooker near the end of the sauce cook time.

How long does pasta take to cook in a slow cooker? ›

Cover and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours or on high for 1 to 2 hours. Check at the 3 (on low) or 1 (on high) hour mark to ensure the pasta does not over cook. To check for doneness, use a fork to pull a “test” noodle from the center of the slow cooker. Once it is tender, the pasta is done.

Can I put mac and cheese in a crock pot to keep warm? ›

Keep cooked macaroni and cheese warm in a crockpot for serving at a potluck or anytime you need the dish to stay warm for hours. Spraying the crockpot insert with nonstick cooking spray prevents the macaroni from sticking to the insert without adding extra calories and fat.

How to thicken a sauce in the crockpot? ›

A cornstarch slurry is a mixture of a cold liquid with cornstarch. It is used as a thickening agent, and is particularly common in Asian sauces. As a rule of thumb, dissolve 2 parts cold water and 1 part cornstarch. Add the slurry to your sauce as it simmers in the slow cooker.

Can you put dry pasta in sauce to cook? ›

By skipping the separate boiling of the pasta and instead adding the dried noodles straight to the sauce, you can make a weeknight-friendly meal in just one pot. Bonus: It makes the pasta more flavorful, too.

What happens if you don't boil water before adding pasta? ›

Adding the pasta to water that isn't boiling will actually increase your overall cook time and cause your pasta to sit in the water longer. You will end up with pasta that has absorbed too much water with a mushy texture. Be patient and wait for a rapid boil; it'll pay off.

Does pasta go mushy in a slow cooker? ›

When pasta is cooked in the slow cooker, however, the liquid heats up slowly, so the starch has more time to swell before being checked by the protein, resulting in soggy, mushy pasta.

Is 4 hours in slow cooker enough? ›

If a dish usually takes: 15-30 mins, cook it for 1-2 hours on High or 4-6 hours on Low. 30 mins – 1 hour, cook it for 2-3 hours on High or 5-7 hours on Low. 1-2 hours, cook it for 3-4 hours on High or 6-8 hours on Low.

Is slow dried pasta better? ›

The low and slow process preserves the flavor of the wheat and texture of the pasta. You will only find this characteristic in pasta made the artisan way. The gentle drying is what gives artisan pasta a distinctive “al dente” bite.

Why does my crock pot mac and cheese curdle? ›

Why does slow cooker mac and cheese curdle? Well, a few different things cause this to happen. Eggs, pre-shredded cheese, and heat can all cause cheese to separate and result in a curdled texture.

How do you keep mac and cheese from sticking in a crock pot? ›

Give it a stir.

No need to precook the pasta for creamy crock pot mac and cheese, though it's important to stir everything a few times to ensure it all cooks evenly. This also prevents the noodles from sticking to the bottom or sides and potentially burning.

Why is my crockpot mac and cheese grainy? ›

Why Was My Crockpot Macaroni and Cheese Grainy? To avoid this, use good quality Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese. The cheap stuff can cause grittiness. Also, the anti-caking agent used in pre-shredded bagged cheese is a big culprit in grittiness.

Does taking the lid off a slow cooker thicken the sauce? ›

Take the lid off

Place the cooker on a high setting, and open the lid for 30-45 minutes to let excess moisture cook off. The liquid will reduce, leaving you with a thick and delicious gravy or sauce. (Tip: This trick can also be applied for thickening stews, or when you've accidentally added too much liquid.)

Can I use a simmer sauce in a slow cooker? ›

The beauty of this approach lies in its versatility, as simmering sauces seamlessly adapt to the slow cooker's gentle heat, ensuring their flavors remain uncompromised. Simmer sauces because they are interchangeable, empowering you to explore a world of taste without limitations.

Why does gravy go watery in a slow cooker? ›

This moist environment allows you to leave food to cook for hours without risking it drying out. But because there is no evaporation, the liquid isn't able to reduce and thicken naturally in a slow cooker, often resulting in watery sauces and loose gravies. The common solution? Using a thickener.

Can I add uncooked pasta? ›

If you're using pasta made with semolina and egg -- in other words, what most Americans think of as traditional pasta -- adding it to your soup uncooked for the last eight to 10 minutes of cooking time is perfectly acceptable.

Can you put all raw ingredients in a slow cooker? ›

One of the main attractions for many people is the ease of a slow cooker, so when you're looking for recipes, avoid those that suggest a lot of pre-preparation. For many dishes, particularly soups and stews, you really can just throw all the ingredients in.

How do you cook undercooked pasta after adding sauce? ›

If you've already added the sauce to the undercooked pasta, you can return it to the stove. Simply pour it back into a pot, add some water to help prevent the sauce from thickening too much and stir the pasta occasionally. Ensure it's fully cooked by testing a piece before removing it from the stove.

Do I have to cook pasta before baking? ›

The pasta just needs to absorb water to cook — but it doesn't have to be through boiling. In the Serious Eats piece, J. Kenji López-Alt explains the reasoning behind cooking your pasta before baking it: Pasta needs to absorb about 80% of its own weight in water in order to cook through.
